Details
The ZKDU has replaced the earlier versions of the Keyboard Display Unit models KDU and KDU Plus. The ZKDU retains backward compatibility and standard functions to allow easy integration with the EPL/ZPL printer-compatible printers that have a 9-pin serial port. The ZKDU retains all of the useful features of the legacy Keyboard Display Unit (KDU and KDUPlus) and adds support for ZPL formats, an auto-sensing serial port, and an auxiliary interface.
 | NOTE The ZKDU does not support the terminal, setup, or file modes of the KDU Plus. It cannot be used to run ZBI programs that rely on Terminal Mode. |
- The Zebra EPL and ZPL desktop printers have been designed to support the ZKDU (or other external devices) connecting directly to the serial port.
- These printers have an RS-232 compatible interface that includes a 5 Volt DC power circuit available for external devices such as scanners and the ZKDU.
 | NOTE Current Zebra desktop printers’ default to the epl_zpl language and are not recognized by the ZKDU. The ZKDU shows “Detecting Printer” for several minutes before its screen eventually reverts to “No EPL or ZPL printer found.” To allow the ZKDU to be properly detected, the printer needs to be specifically set for either “EPL” or “ZPL.” This can be accomplished by sending the command ! U1 setvar "device.languages" "epl" or ! U1 setvar "device.languages" "zpl" and then cycle power on the printer. You could use the communication window of the Zebra Setup Utilities to send either command to update the printer’s language setting. |
